Post 16 Bursaries

The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund provides financial support to help students overcome specific barriers to participation so they can remain in education.The government’s view is that the post-16 Bursary is primarily to support disadvantaged young people, a post-16 equivalent of the pupil premium.

Young people qualify for a mandatory bursary if they are;

  • In public care.
  • Are claiming the DLA and ESA, (Employment Support Allowance)
  • Are in receipt of ESA and Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Or are on, Income Support’ in their own right

Each year we will write to all parents/carers of students in the post 16 department to establish who is entitled to a mandatory bursary for that year.

Students in receipt of the bursary will normally be required to have their own bank account to pay the bursary into however following guidance from the EFA the school recognises that in some cases opening an account on behalf of some of our most vulnerable students is very difficult and where this is the case bursaries can be paid into the account of the main carer who administers the DLA/PIP on behalf of the student.
